In response, wildlife forces were deployed in Bira and Kamulach in 2010. However, there is still rampant killing of ostriches by the surrounding communities who consider ostrich as local medicine (fat and born marrow) and also the feathers of ostrich are for traditional activities such as marriages, dance and celebrations.
- Imotong Mountain sometimes referred to as Imotong ranges is the highest mountain in South Sudan with 3178m high. It has equatorial type of climate and a dense montane forests supporting diverse wildlife. Imotong Mountain provides one of the unique ecosystems in the world. It serves over one million people both in South Sudan and Northern Uganda. As a water catchment, Imotong mountain is home to over 12 twelve rivers most of which are permanent and others seasonal most of them serving as tributaries to River Nile. Without river Kineiti that emanate from Imotong Mountain, birds in Bandigilo National Park cannot survive. Bandigilois rich in bird species and some of them are said to come from as far as Europe-Germany and Middle East-Israel. Imotong is a habitat of wildlife that includes: animals and birds. Research has revealed that Imotong is home to some of the unique species of birds that are not found anywhere in the world. However, due to the present cutting of trees, the Imotong ecosystem is under threat from extinction. Already according to research animals such as Buffalos and Elephants are extinct. Given the current rate of de-afforestation, Imotong mountain ecosystem is likely to become party to history if not intervened.
- In conservation MADA’s priority is to conserveImotong Mountain forest whereby communities around are sensitized not to destroy the ecosystem through cutting trees. There high cutting of trees for charcoal, timber, local building materials, settlement, agriculture and other human service provided by forest.
